Abstract |
The intend of this study is to find out the architectural characteristics and trends of elderly housing in USA, in order to refer them in establishing the basic plan for elderly housing in Korea. The types of elderly housing can be classified as independent senior living units, assisted living facilities, skilled nursing facilities and retirement communities. Site-visits of elderly housings in Wisconsin and California areas were executed and related drawings, brochures, articles, papers, and web sites were analysed. In conclusion, the architectural characteristics and trends of elderly housing can be summarized as follows; pursuit of homelike environment, consideration of privacy, provision for safety and evacuation, implementation of inter-generation program, normalization of elderly living, remodelling of the facilities, quality improvement of facility and service, shift from institutional care to community care, preference of small scale in household, increase in computer use, ordering services from outside suppliers, diversification & specialization of elderly housing types. and decentralization of functions. |
