Abstract |
This thesis aims to define mediatheque, the new type of information storing and providing facility which has emerged in today's radically changing information society. Also the research aims to discover it's programmatic system and spatial structure. The following results were derived. The explosive increase in information required new forms for storage which became possible through digital media. Also the main purpose of the library shifted from the preservation of knowledge to the access and application of it. These catalyzed the concept of mediatheques. Mediatheques which all together constitute a complex program of libraries, galleries, theatres, cultural and commercial facilities, were found to compose these programs by vertical layering and horizontal distribution. The complex programs were integrated spatially recovering the discontinuity. In realizing an integrated space with a complex program, three elements, that is, continuity, mutual communication and transparency were induced. These elements become integrated under the concept of publicity. Publicity, the abstract concept of communication of information and the physical character of public space, was the ultimate value pursued in its integrated space of complex programs. |
