Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to redefine 'publicity' by articulating the types of 'public spaces' in the contemporary housing. The Europan competition in 1999 is chosen for the subject of analysis in that it searches for the creative ideas for housing problems and materialize them into the physical environment. To deduce the types of 'public space' regenerated, two criteria are set up: 1) housing lay-out showing the extent of the isolation/integration between the residential area and the external surroundings 2) way of occupying the ground by the 'public spaces', which can explain the recognition between 'public spaces'. Therefore four types of 'Publicity' can be concluded by organizing two criteria: 1) the traditional community based on the communal interaction 2) infra-community based on the functional infrastructure 3) the internalized urban community based on the urban fabric anonymity 4) soft surface-community based on the plurality shared by the soft integration into the external surroundings. Especially, the forth 'publicity' can be operated as the criterion making a distinction the productive landscape concept based on the new concept of community from the variously confused interpretation of landscape. |
