Abstract The purpose of this study was to design by experiment a comfortable environment and conserve lighting energy while establishing the proper illumination ratio between artificial light and daylight under an overcast sky. The experiment was conducted using a scaled down lecture room equipped with a dimmer system to regulate the illumination as a model. This study was carried out using three experiments. The first experiment was to test the effectiveness of a mock-up versus a scaled model. The second experiment's purpose was to select the most appropriate Fluorescent lamp to simulate daylight under an overcast sky. Finally, the proper illumination ratio was established in the third experiment.
The following are the results of the experiments. 1) In the first experiment, a T-test analysis was carried out to compare the mock-up and scaled models. The results showed no significant difference. 2) The second result indicated that the daylight Fluorescent lamp was the best simulation of daylight among four kinds of lamps; daylight Fluorescent lamps, cool-white Fluorescent lamps, warm-white Fluorescent lamps, and light-bulb Fluorescent lamps. 3) The proper illumination ratio was obtained by the result of the third experiment under a cloudy sky. These ratios are shown in table 10. The lighting power was reduced to 6~13% when partly dimmed.
