Abstract This paper is intended to investigate the properties and availabilities of anti-freeze agent for cold weather concreting. The anti-freeze agent is made by mixing waste coolant, nitrite powder, solution which is dissolved to water up to maximum solubility, and superplasticizer to compensate flow loss. According to test results, the anti-freeze agent made with the proportion of waste coolant agent, water, nitrite solution and superplasticizer (1 : 1.5 : 1 : 0.26) shows favorable performance not only in dropping freeze temperature, accelerating setting time, but also enhancing strength gain at early and later age. If influences of the anti-freeze agent made in this study on the long term performance are looked into, it gives good effects on the performance of the concrete at cold weather.
