Abstract The purpose of this study was to verify and compare the results of approximate calculation with model experiment. The approximate calculation to get temperature distribution from top to bottom was made of thermal balance equation and stack effect in the solar chimney. The inside surface temperature of each wall in solar chimney was estimated using the outdoor temperature and solar radiation. The model experiments were conducted with 1/20 scaled down according to "the law of similarity". To investigate natural ventilation rate of solar chimney, the experimental models for solar chimney made of 4.8m, 6.8m and 7.8m height above the roof and section area 4.93㎡ with south facing equipped with glass panel. For the solar chimney with 4.93㎡ of section area, 3:1 aspect ratio and 6.8m height, it was found that the percentage difference in air temperature between approximate calculation and model experiment were about 14%. Also, the air velocity was about 5%. It is expected from the model experiment that air flow rate by natural ventilation using the solar chimney could provide over 6500㎥/h under the condition that 4.93㎡ of section area, 3:1 of aspect ratio, 4:1~6:1 of the ratio of inlet area to outlet area and 6.8m height.
