Abstract High-rise and long span structures frequently require the use of hybrid structural system so as to compete with the structural limitations of conventional structural system. This paper discusses the seismic performance of the composite beam. General composite beam can increase the flexural stiffness, strength and stability of the structure by welding shear studs on the beam flange and combing it with concrete slab under the positive bending compared with the structural steel beam, but at the same time it brings about a large difference in stiffness and strength in the positive and negative bending moment. It is also tends to fracture at the beam bottom flange, which observed in 1995 Kobe earthquake. Therefore, a composite beam with slit is proposed to solve such problems, which is characterized by the slit in the concrete slab around the column and the non-composite region at the end of the beam. The research result clearly showed that the proposed system could inherit high flexural stiffness from general composite beam and large beam rotation capacity from steel beam.
