Abstract The objective of this paper is to reveal the transforming process and meaning of the Modern Urban Housing built on from 1920's to 1970's in Korea from a viewpoint of indigenity of dwelling-culture. We can hypothesize that urban housing types constitute of sub-structures such as a core-structure and a periphery-structure. The core-structure contains characteristics of persistence in housing plan under the foreign cultural impacts. On the other hand, the periphery-structure means a collection of modifiable features such as the imported dwelling cultures and modern conditions. Various plan-types appeared in the modernization period of Korea are categorized and analyzed. The conclusion shows that the modern urban housing plan is conjoined by the core-structure of the Korean traditional housing that is consistent from 'Anche', and the periphery-structure of the modern housing that was modified from the 'Bacakche'.
