This study is on the features and meanings of royal shrines under the reign of King Youngjo and Jungjo, especially on the necessity, process, location, hierarchy, scale and urban influence of their establishments. The royal shrines, frequently built under the reign of King Youngjo and Jungjo, were facilities for the ritual of family members who could not be enshrined in Jongmyo. In respect to their urban location, they were built near the royal palaces, especially in Changyigung and Hamchunwon during the previously mentioned period. There was a hierarchy of architectural scale and title among them: the highest one was Jeon, followed by Gung, Myo in sequence. From an urban point of view, their establishments were important events that catalyzed the increase of the King's walkabout in the urban area, and induced His communication with the citizens. It also changed the King's settlements in the multi-palace system, and vitalized the urban area near Kyungmogung. |
