Abstract Since solar daylighting system provides energy free and visual comfort lighting, many daylighting systems with dimming control have been implemented in real building. However, cost has been considered as one of major barriers due to the difficult design and control of the heavy light collecting system. One of the solutions for the heavy design issues would be using a light weight material such as fresnel and prism film. This paper introduces a cost effective model of solar fresnel daylighting(SFD) system with a prismatic light distributing pipe system. This proposed prototype system consists of light collector, light transformer and light pipe. KIER has designed, constructed and tested this prototype system utilizing photometric, mechanical and electronic concept and principle. Test results indicated that 1) a switch of transformer input prism type film from 70° to 90°, for instance, would be required to keep the efficiency high constant and 2) the efficiency of the system has been monitored in KIER indoor and outdoor test cell and simulated and verified with TRACE-PRO program. The overall system efficiency would be monitored as 4.96% while simulated as 8.59% at a solar noon of the test day. Further improvements over the issues of 1) variable focal length correction and 2) additional functions such as heating, shading and ventilating and 3) other optimal control would be conducted more in KIER test cell.
