Abstract |
The purpose of this study is not only to figure out problems encountered with the structural systems of recent complex-shaped (or freeform) buildings, but also to propose a new structural approach called 'Boundary Structures', These structures follow the envelope surfaces of such buildings, composed of a new material, polymer composites, which previously has not been applied to the field of architectural structure in any significant way. For this purpose, it consists of exploring complex-shaped building projects in terms of inner structures and searching for right components of polymer composites as well as proper manufacturing processes. At last, as an experimental model, a unit of boundary structure is fabricated with a chosen material and process. Consequently, the study aims at offering architects an unprecedented freedom in design and a new paradigm for realizing their creative ideas. |
