Abstract Existing interior space of the high-rise apartments Korea generally forms a fixed space which neglect to correspond with a life cycle and character of dweller's settlement. Recent years, the variable type apartment developments are attempted occasionally but the space planning problems and its circumstances are faced difficulties to present a better solution. This study based on the survey of the high-rise apartments with its floor area less than 85m2 in the northern region of Seoul to analyze their characteristics, concept of variable type residential space, structural problem, and also the examples of foreign countries to suggest an efficient system to compose the variable type interior space for the high-rise apartments in Korea.
