Abstract In this study, it is investigated what are the paradigms of the prize-winners at the architectural competition held nationally in Germany. The total of 52 works were selected at the competition during the year of 1997 to 2001. These prize-winning works are analyzed in five categories(Context, Floor Plan, Organization of Space, Mass and Facade, Structure) and then classified in the appropriate paradigms. The order of the paradigms which have appeared most frequently is as follows: 1) Classical-Humanistic paradigm, 2) Historicist-Positivist paradigm, 3) Formalistic-Aesthetic Paradigm, 4) Received Aesthetic paradigm. The paradigms indicate the recent trend of German architecture. Furthermore, it may imply one of the main streams of the European architecture, given the situation of the process of the unification of Europe. In addition, the paradigms introduced in this study can apply to the architectural design field of Korea, which is part of that of the world.
