| Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to set the basic research data and look into the western style architecture of Jeong-dong area in the modern Korean history of architecture. In the latter era of the Chos?n Dynasty, Americans, British and Russians were mostly in the western part of Seoul due to the fact that there were all three countries' Legations were in that area. The buildings in the first residential area for westerners were government buildings, schools and religious ones, which were mostly in bricks. British Legation in red bricks and concrete was designed by F. J. Marshall who worked at the Office Works in Shanghai, which was under the main Office of Works of Britain. At that time in Korea, It can be presumed that the good quality bricks had been made in Seoul and laying bricks was done by mostly Chinese with the help of Korean and Japanese workers. In that building, concrete was used for the foundation and floor and the roof was built of concrete and steel. The fact that Koreans were involved in this work influenced other construction works using bricks in that period of Korea. |
