Abstract The results of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analyses of mesoscale climate in the Tokyo area are presented. We introduce the model for geophysical flow problems developed by Mellor and Yamada. The accuracy of CFD analysis is examined by comparing its results with the measured data. The topography and present land-use situation in Japan are incorporated into the predictions with the numerical database provided by the National Land Agency of Japan. The computational results of mesoscale climate in the central Japan are compared with measured data. The results of the computation, in which the present situation of land-use in Japan was given as a boundary condition, corresponded fairly well with the measured data. However, more effort should be devoted to examining and improving the prediction accuracy, so CFD analysis can be used for practical applications. The CFD method will become a very powerful tool for city planning in the future.
