Abstract The traditional construction management systems provide a project manager with the various analyzed reports such as progress control, earned value management and resource management. However, the reports and functions in the traditional systems are still limited in 2D concept. Recently, the 4D concept, which time of construction schedule is linked to space of drawings, is being used in the scheduling method. This study analyzes the limitation of those systems and an improved method for developing 4D system through a comparative analysis of representative 4D systems that are developed up to date. And this study develops a prototype of 4D system with some functions that 4D model can be simulated by work zone and specific duration. There are great benefits with 4D system but it is not easy to implement all of it in the construction industry. The results of this study could be a methodology for improving limitations of 4D system.
