Abstract This research aims to find apartment planning alternatives through analyzing the relationship between apartment space organization and their use. The apartments developed in Busan are classified into seven types according to dwelling size(A-, B-, and D-sized apartments) and the layout of the main rooms in the interior of the apartment: A1-, A2-, B1-, B2-, B3-, D1-, and D2-type. Residents' attitude toward activity and setting, the correspondence between activity and setting, and the residents' satisfaction are compared according to type. The main findings are as follows. First, planning alternative limitations for A- and B-sized apartments are the multi-use of public space and the availability of facilities for certain activities. That of D-sized apartments are a sufficiently sized master bedroom and a dining room for entertainment. Second, the planning criteria in the A-sized apartment is the number of rooms and functionality of the public area for couple's activities, family recreation and entertainment. Third, the planning criteria in the B-sized apartment is functionality of the livingroom, formality of the dining room, and openness of public area in accordance with couples' privacy. Forth, the planning criteria in the D-sized apartment is formality of the dining room and a room for the house chores.
