Abstract This study analyzes the spatial structures of vernacular agricultural villages in beach, mid-mountain and mountain areas of Yeongdong.
The results of this study are as follows;
Farmhouses are located along a village road. Since the mountain village is located at a small ravine, the bypaths which stem from the village road are not formed or is shorter than those mid-mountain or beach villages.
The beach and mid-mountain villages have the collective farmhouse type. On the other hand, the mountain villages have the scattered farmhouse type, which is due to the fact that farmlands are distributed along village roads and streamlets.
In case that farmhouses are located along village roads and streamlet, bypaths are shaped according to the stem type. On the other hand, in case that the village road is the pass or detour road, bypaths have the stem type branched from ring shape.
The shrine of a tutelary deity, the stone monument of a village origin and the monument pavilion of a devoted son, all of which are located rather at the village entrance than at it's center, symbolize the starting point of a village.
Viewing a village from the entry, the dwelling area on right side is more developed than that on left side.
Farmhouses of Yeongdong. are surrounded by a fence or not, so that the space realm system of road and farmhouse unit is classified as public-semi private-private space or public-semi public-private space.
