Abstract Recently, it is noticeable that the use of sea-sand containing high levels of chloride is rapidly increased due to the exhaustion of the river-sand. However, sea-sand without removal of salt causes corrosion of embedded reinforcement. Corrosion of rebars sometimes bring sudden failure of reinforced concrete structures, because bond characteristics are deeply affected by surface condition of rebar embedded in concrete. Therefore, in this test, characteristics of bond strength due to corrosion were studied. The purpose of this research is furnishing basic data to build criteria for use of bars corroded before and after concrete casting in the R/C member. Test results show that bond strength of rebar corroded after concrete casting is shown the rapid diminution as compared with specimen corroded before concrete casting. Specimen corroded after concrete casting showed relatively gradual decreasement of bond strength with the increasement of corrosion rate.
