Abstract As apartment housings are facilities with long lifespan, their spacial flexibility for the various needs of residents and adaptability for maintenance are very important. These characteristics are more important in small-size apartments which have limited possibilities to be changed due to small floor space and differentiated user groups like a small househlod or low-income, large one. Therefore it is necessary that small-size apartments should be designed specially to consider these conditions.
The purpose of this study is to propose a flexible model plan of small-size korean apartment housings which meet residents' various needs based on the life cycle and life style and which are easy to be maintained. Small-size apartment is defined as the apartment with unit area under average(about 45㎡). The supports of small-size apartment are designed after analyzing the related architectural laws and examining the location(zone and sector) and size of spaces in the similar size existing apartments. The model consists of rahmen structures and floor trenches to obtain maximum flexibility. Standardization of spaces and compartments are implemented under modular coordination. The area of unit is 42.9㎡ and the size is 5.5m×7.8m. Variations of plans are proposed by 4 stages planning based on the life cycle, the number of household members and minimum standards of living conditions in Korea. Although this model have many limitations, it will be a flexible model of small-size apartments.
