Abstract |
This study proposes a way of using XML technology in order to facilitate the exchange of building information via electronic medium for the facility management. The CAFM, Computer-Aided Facility Management, has been more emphasized as the life-cycle management of buildings becomes more important. The CAFM, in general, is defined as a combination of CAD program and database system. Such applications have had a tendency of being a closed system which could not well integrated into other systems, and do not allow the integration or expansion, while the system could be operated by those who are specially trained to do so. The paradigm is rapidly changing such that rich representation of facility information is desired while the seamless integration with EDI framework is achieved. On the other hand, promising technologies are emerging such as XML and Web Service. This paper examines the problems of existing systems, discusses development issues, and finally proposes an XML-based building space description method which can be a pivotal medium for the development of CAFM systems in the context of new CAFM paradigms. |
