Abstract The purpose of this study is to propose planning informations for the common space based on the resident's cognition and behaviors in the public open space of the multi-family housing.
The housewives and children are the main subjects for the promotion of the community consciousness. And the major place occurs the social activity actively are the elevator hall and lobby on the 1st floor of the building >resting places > play lot >near the stairway and corridor of the building > near the entrance of the building in order. From the observation survey, it was known that the infant, children and housewives are the major subject of the outdoor activities, and the outdoor activities are affected by the physical conditions. The infant and children play near the building despite of the parking lots in front of the building, with the adults resting and speaking with others. The infant become to be more active in the cases that is connected effectively between the entrance of the building and the outdoor places, and the children are more active in the cases which the road is good for the play with bicycle, roller blade, etc.
The outdoor places should be planned with these theme, 'making the place near the building for the children play' and 'the organic connection with the building and the other public open space' for the promotion of the good neighborhoods in the multi-family housing.
