Abstract The purpose of this study is to establish environmental standards for the assessment of sustainable housing planning. Within this aim, the research firstly reviewed BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environment Assessment Method). Secondly, it established preparatory environmental standards for 12 indicators(Volume Ratio, distance between city center and housing estate, distance between local center and housing estate, number of crossing to elementary school, number of bicycle parking place, area of breast wall in a hilly district, distance between subway station and housing estate, number of road lane around housing estate, usage of solar energy, ratio of green area, area of biotop, distance between nearest natural habitat and housing estate) through the analysis of the standards of the 118 existing housing estates in Korea. Finally, minimum and ideal environmental standards for sustainable housing planning have been made through survey to related professionals. The standards can be applied to assess sustainability level of housing planning and also used planning standard.
