Abstract The conventional analysis methods are performed using the assumption that the connections are either fully rigid or ideally pinned. Thus, it cannot predict exactly the performance of overall frames because all connections have some rotational rigidity. Many researchers studied bolted connections with assuming as semi-rigid and welded connections as rigid. Although there are many structural merits of the Concrete Filled Tube(CFT) columns, it is very difficult not only to manufacture connections but also to understand exact behavior of CFT Column-to-Beam connections. This paper is focused on the connections between CFT column and steel beams reinforced with exterior plate diaphragms. These connections perform flexibly comparing to exiting interior and exterior diaphragm connection types due to out-of-plane deformations of the column flange at the tension side under the bending moment. The main purpose of this study is to derive a function of the moment-rotation curve for the connections. Although the function should be derived based on sufficient experimental results, there are not many test results of Column-to-Beam connections. Therefore, it is needed to utilize the analytical method by using a finite element analysis program ANSYS. The analysis models are constructed based on the existing test specimens and additional models are made to compensate for the insufficient test results. The proposed equations of connections can predict moment-rotation relationships of connections and the flexibility of connections make different overall frame performance.
