Abstract Analytical models and a performance-based seismic design procedure were proposed for a steel structure with buckling-restrained knee-braces. The hinge-connected main structural members, such as beams and columns, were designed only for gravity loads, and all the lateral seismic load was resisted by the braces. The design procedure was based on the concept of the capacity spectrum method, and the size of knee-brace was estimated using the equivalent damping required to be supplied to meet the given performance objective. Parametric study was performed with design variables such as yield stress and cross-sectional area of knee-braces to find out proper slope and yield strength of the brace. The proposed method was applied to a five-story structure with buckling-restrained knee-braces. According to the time-history analysis results, the maximum displacement of the model structure retrofitted by knee braces turned out to correspond well with the desired target displacement.
