Abstract Overseas construction has played an important role as a main axis in the developing Korean economy. During recent years, it has suffered from the Korean currency crisis followed by the South-east Asia economic crisis, afterward. While the international construction market has been enlarging continuously, the Korean firms’ new contracts even have been decreasing. They have been unsuccessful in obtaining new works. There are so many reasons for this decline, such as their limited geographical markets, the lack of technologies, financial problems, and so on. Aiming to understand recent trend of the international construction market and to suggest the plans for international competitiveness of the Korean overseas construction, this study analyzes the trends of the international construction markets and compares the domestic firms’ performance with the foreign. Extensive review and analysis of statistical data related to the overseas construction have been performed, and 217 cases of the Korean overseas project during 1999 to 2001 have been reviewed. In addition, the financial statements of the domestic and foreign firms during 1997 to 2001 have been also analyzed.
