Abstract The purposes of this study were to analyze the characteristics of buildings and to suggest design stategies for the street space especially focused building elevation at old citadel street in Chonju city. In this case city , though the old citadel was entirely destroyed except south great gate (Pung-Nam-Mun), it's lay-out can be inferred ; when the city planning was executed in 1930s, new street system was established by grid. To make these streets vital and distinctive, it must be considered to analyze the historic and physical context and make street spaces present region's own characters. For these purpose, some characteristics of buildings in citadel street were surveyed and analyzed. By this analysis, some design strategies of the street between two gates are proposed : to make old citadel street as pedestrian route, to make buildings and street elevations guideline and to make pavings and street furnitures be in good arrangement
