Abstract This study is a work created under the purpose of reviewing the role of lighting plan of the cities and the transition of the public lights. We looked over the lighting plan that had been used in the cities in the past and the range of its use, and we also considered our country's unique culture of lighting. The result of this study is as follows.
① The artificial lighting, which started with the discovery of fire, first performed the duty of heating, cooking, lighting at the simultaneously. But as time went by, there came a change that meant specialization in lighting function, and nowadays it plays different roles in many categories according to the role and purpose of light. ② If we consider the origin of the lighting of the cities the point that lighting was introduced to public places under the purpose of public reasons, this study discovered that the origin of our country's lighting goes up to Sejo dynasty in 1458, and the form of the street lamp which is attached to the side of the streets has the origin that goes up to the 20th year of Injo dynasty(about 1642). ③ The development of the early lighting first took place in the decoration of the lighting apparatus itself, and then in increasing the quality of the origin of light. In these days the change in the function of lighting is taking place from the primary effect of lighting that means the endowment of light to the secondary effect of the lighting, which means illumination that decorates other objects. ④ Our country's traditional lighting apparatus is divided into two classes, one in functional apparatus which gives light, and the other in significant apparatus which gives information. Also, in the use of lighting there's a division between the general lighting and the sectional lighting.
