Abstract This study is the first part of a continual study regarding the generation of artificial earthquakes in Korean Peninsula. The purpose of this study is to determine the epicenters and magnitudes of future earthquakes based on a historical earthquake catalogue. Several researchers have proposed historical earthquake catalogues. Thus in this study the catalogues are compared in the view of occurrence rate calculated according to periods, magnitudes, and geographical location. From the catalogues magnitudes and epicenters of earthquakes for 1,000 years are generated. Using this simulation data, peak ground accelerations in Seoul having 10%, 5%, 2% of exceedance probability in 50years are calculated.
