Abstract This study aims to improve the Indoor Air Quality(IAQ) in Buildings. Especially, to investigate the concentration of Radon Gas, the document survey, the laboratory experiment and the field study were conducted. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: Sources of indoor radon include the soil and rock, water supplies, natural gas, and building materials(concrete, brick, gypsumboard, clay). Especially the laboratory experiment of radon emission rate from unit surface area of various materials showed that radon gas was most emitted from the clay and gypsumboard. And according to the wide field measurement of buildings, the concentration of radon gas was most detected in both houses made of clay and underground buildings. Adding to computer simulation, however, the concentration of radon was much reduced if the space was ventilated. Therefore, building designers, constructors and engineers should recognize that the reasonable selection of building materials can make a great contribution to reduce the concentration of Radon Gas. Also, to control the emitted radon gas efficiently, appropriate ventilation including mechanical equipment and opening planning are required.
