Abstract We can know that the square column was used in the specific style of high ranked architecture in the period of Three Kingdoms, according as we investigate columns of remains. Specially, the wooden stupa used the square column. This conflicts with a general opinion that the square column is been used in the style of low ranked architecture. A general notion of the columnar section is been changed in history. The circular column was diffused throughout the special architecture in the period of United Shilla Dynasty. As a result of it, the circular column was popularized in all architecture, in addition few architecture had the mixed type of circular and square column. This is similar to that is observed in the provincial architecture of the Chosun Dynasty. A present concept of the columnar section is based on the purposeful press of the political and social since the seventeenth century.
