Abstract This study aims to clarify the emerging of Modernism in Korean elementary school which were built in of reinforced concrete in 1930's through the survey and research of 49 public elementary school which were built in Seoul from 1895 to 1942. Throughout the wooden and brick building period(1985-1925), reinforced concrete elementary school buildings emerged first in 1924, reinforced concrete buildings were the most popular elementary school buildings of 1930's. This reinforced concrete period could be divided into former period(1924-1933) and latter period(1933-1939) in which characteristics of Modernism are found.
The high efficiency of reinforced concrete in heat insulation, fire resistance, durability and high density made reinforced concrete school buildings main current in 1930's. The regulation of Japanese reinforced concrete elementary school buildings which were built slightly earlier than Korean's would be model of Korean reinforced concrete school buildings.
The policy on wide spreading of elementary school from 1920's and its acceleration from 1933 arouse popularization of elementary school and increasing needs for rapid and economic construction. This made mid-1930's reinforced concrete school buildings have Modernism
