Abstract In performance-based design methods, it is clear that the evaluation of the nonlinear response is required. The NRHA among various nonlinear analysis methods is the most accurate to compute the nonlinear response of structures, but it is time-consuming and necessitate compound knowledge and efforts. This paper presents a NDSM to evaluate nonlinear response of structures, without iterative computations, given by the structural linear vibration period and yield strength from the pushover analysis, especially for shear buildings system. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the accuracy and reliability of this method from a point of view of various earthquakes and structure parameters.
The conclusions of this study are as follows; 1) NDSM can be used as a practical method to compute the structural linear vibration period and the yielding strength from the stiffness skeleton curve and calculate the nonlinear maximum response of structure directly from nonlinear response spectrum. 2) Comparative evaluation of the response by NDSM with the accurate solution shows that most of the mean errors with various structure parameters are centered around 3% error with respect to SRSS mean.
