Abstract When RC beams in original structure are strengthened by carbon fiber sheet, reinforced beam has initial strain between original RC beams and bonded carbon fiber sheet due to loads acting on un-strengthened beam and is subject to partial damage. So, the strengthening efficiency for flexural members might be influenced by the initial strain and status of damage. But current design method or theory for flexural strengthening cannot account the difference of initial strain between original flexural members and bonded material and status of damage. In this paper, developed the nonlinear section analysis program considering difference of initial strains and damage status of original member, and conformed experiment for RC beams strengthened by carbon fiber sheet with/without pre-load. Test parameters of experiment are pre-loads(80% and 110% of yield capacity of original beams) and the number of ply of carbon fiber sheet(1ply, 2ply, 3ply) and tensile reinforcement ratio(0.85, 1.91%). From the experimental results, the structural behaviour of strengthened specimens are compared with in terms of yield load and ultimate load, load-deflection relation, ductility, strengthening efficiency, and the experimental results are compared with analytic results by developed program.
