Abstract The aim of this study is to analyze the modes of urban lighting planning of Paris and Lyon, respectively the first city and the second in France. For this purpose, this article examines how the ideas of outdoor lighting has developed by now and what conceptual instruments has been adopted for urban lighting planning in this European country. And then it analyzes, from the comparative point of view, the systems of urban lighting planning of the two cities. This study shows that the urban lightings of Paris are mainly planned in the level of individual urban development projects without an over-all master plan, whereas in the case of Lyon the master plan of urban lighting was made and carried into effect in consideration of the urban unity and its other urban development plans.
