| Abstract |
The paper deals chiefly with universalization and colonization of architecture in Japan and Australia between the period of 1950s and the 70s. Walter Gropius' attempt to propagandize American Modernism in Japan is defined here as a colonizing act which had unprecedented impact on the following trends in Japanese architecture headed by Kenzo Tange and the Metabolists. In the process of universalization of Japanese architecture, however, an Australian critic, Robin Boyd, was in the frontline to represent Japan with his influential publications in world standard. Boyd's contribution of Japanese architecture to western world also influenced his own stance in Australian architecture by suggesting the Modern Movement as the status quo, which in turn was a status of colonization per se. |
