Abstract |
The process of professionalization--an overlooked aspect of modernity in architecture--entails not only the establishment of an inner discipline but its acceptance by the public as well. In the architectural exhibitions of the modern era we witness an active field of discourse, reflecting the will of the architects in their pursuit of a professional position and role against the changing conditions of modern society, and nowhere is this public promotion more eagerly sought after than in the annual exhibitions of the Architectural League of New York. The various phases of its exhibition--which spanned across five decades since 1886-- articulate the changes of architectural professionalism, from its ideals as Beaux-Arts artists to its gradual transformation into commercial designers, and ultimately retaining its status as art albeit through the exterior endorsement of art institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York. |
