Abstract For simple lateral analysis of flat plate system, equivalent frame method (EFM) and effective beam width method (EBWM) are usually used for lateral analysis. But they can be applied only for the system with regular column layout; they could not be easily applied to the irregular column layout. A simplified analysis method is provided for the flat plate system with irregular column layout for lateral load, which is based on EBWM. To check the accuracy, the proposed method is compared with FEM plate element modelling of which column zone is rigidly connected to column center. Two plan types are selected for the numerical comparisons; one is rectangular and the other is Y shape. Each building is 21 stories and story height is 2.6m that is typical story height for the residential building in Korea. Also the effect of column section types is considered. The proposed simplified method shows good corresponds with the FEM analyses not only for regular column layout but also for irregular column layout.
