Abstract Investigating a fitting diagonal crack and fracture planes according to the idealized loading path and the failure modes of reinforced concrete deep beams with web openings, this study presents a model to predict their shear strengths. This study introduced the fundamental concept of fracture mechanics and the equilibrium of energy. Equations to determine the initial diagonal cracking strength and the ultimate shear strength were derived by the generalized Vierendeel truss analogy and the strut-tie action, respectively. It was observed that the proposed design equations reasonably predict the shear strength of deep beams with rectangular web openings.
