Abstract A method that estimates stiffness matrix and mass matrix of building from modal test data is presented, also calculate of damage location and quantity from modal test data in damaged building using this method is proposed in this paper. The method to estimate stiffness matrix and mass matrix depends on measurable points that are less in number than the total structural degrees of freedom. this method put use to the first two orders of structural mode measured. based on this method modal data of unmeasurable points are estimated, then total stiffness matrix and mass matrix of structure are obtained by using the frist two orders of modal data. Damage location index is calculated by mode-stiffness of the measured in damaged building and estimated structural mode using this method. Damaged stiffness quantity is calculated by modified stiffness in damage location index. Finally, examples is studied in this paper, and its result shows that a method of calculate damage location and quantity using modal data measured in damaged building is reliable.
