Abstract This paper is concerned with the damping ratio of row-rise buildings by new alternating synchronized human excitation revised by author. Conventional synchronized human excitation can not be applied to row-rise buildings due to the limitation of excitation frequency of from 0.5Hz to 2.5Hz. Measurements of 4 row-rise buildings, which have higher natural frequency over 2.5Hz, were performed for application of alternating synchronized human excitation. The free vibration waves of 4 building were obtained successfully from alternating synchronized human excitation. Half power method proves to overestimate the damping ratio than that of alternating synchronized human excitation due to the error of band width.
