Abstract This paper deals with the shear strengthening effect of RC beams strengthened with aramid, glass, carbon fiber sheets, glass fiber reinforced plastic(GFRP) and steel plate. Twenty four RC beams(including control beam) were experimentally evaluated to determine improvements in shear strength. Performance (deflections, strains and ultimate loads) of RC beams which were preloaded up to 50%, 70% and 85% of the failure load were compared with that of undamaged beams. The variables are strengthening type (I type, U type), strengthening material and damaged level. The results show that strengthening of damaged beams are structurally efficient and damaged beams strengthened with fiber sheet exhibited ultimate strength and stiffness performance similar to undamaged beams. In addition, the increase of strength ranged from 30.71 percent to 89.02 percent over the strength of control beam.
