Abstract The following are results of a comparative study on the cross-section of columns used in the ancient wooden architecture. First, the square column was used in a part of the wooden stupa and high symbolic architecture, therefore we can know that the square column was applied to the architecture which has the specific applications or high in rank. Second, The decision on a section shape of columns was set according to the style of plan and the wall equipment in the ancient architecture, and this tendency had a possibility that has been gradually prevailed going through the substitution for the circular columns. Third, some architectures had the aspect of using the mixed-type, which has been made of heteromorphic columnar section. This is clear evidence that the concept and application of columnar sectional classification has been existed. Because the aspect of the mixed-type is observed in some architectures of the Goryo and Chosun Dynasty, we can say that it is result of architectural activity that continued to exist from the ancient times. The style of columnar section is a important factor that can notify tendency of change in the architectural history.
