Abstract |
The research is to analyze the text of apartment modelhouses to scrutinize the process of signification in architecture, based on the 'desire theory'. According to Jacques Lacan (1901-1981),?? unconsciousness is not a congeries of biological instincts and drives, but rather a system of linguistic signifiers. He develops the fundamental Freudian discovery of unconsciousness with structural-linguistics method and construes the processes of condensation and displacement as instances of metaphor and metonymy, which implies that unconscious and desire can be analyzed in scientific methods. Lacan's desire is expressed only in a form of 'absence' and a subject desires the other's desire. Modelhouses are a unique building type, exhibiting the exact residential units, but without a direct reference to the exterior design of the residential buildings. The textuality of the modelhouses is derived from their definition at the building code as a temporary structure with enormous freedom from the various regulations. The study summarizes the modelhouses' modes of expression as follows; exaggeration, geometry, im-materiality and decorative sign |
