Abstract The study analyzes the essential meaning of restoration and conservation. The restoration is not a creative work to simply accomplish the architect's peculiar decision and selection. The principal of restoration can be founded and completed within the constant research and collaboration of historians and artists. However, the restoration is not the only way to approach architectural structures which have great cultural value. According to the theory of Ruskin in England, it insisted that cultural assets could keep their own significance by themselves. Through the conservation not restoration, the cultural properties will be handed down to the future generation, with the passion and soul of the architects and artisans from the early age. After many controversies, Castle Heidelberg in Germany is a good example for applying the Ruskin's theory by itself. Firstly, for the purpose of this study is going to explain the history of Castle Heidelberg. Secondly, it is going to discuss about the conservation of Castle Heidelberg. Base on these thesis, we can establish the method and the meaning of restoration and conservation in Korea.
