Abstract Drift design method based on member displacement participation factors have been applied to drift design of high-rise buildings. Although most of the drift design methods are successfully applied to drift design of structures subjected to static lateral loads, no practical resizing algorithm for drift design of structures subjected to dynamic lateral forces has been developed. Therefore, in this paper, a resizing algorithm based on displacement participation factors from response spectrum analysis is presented for drift design of steel structures subjected to seismic lateral forces. The resizing algorithm can easily determine the structural weight to be resized to minimize the displacement to be controlled by using non-iterative technique without sensitivity analysis. The performance of the method is evaluated using two examples structures.
