Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate how national characteristics of Korean is expressed in the Contemporary Architecture of North Korea. In Contemporary Architecture of North Korea, national characteristics are mainly shown in Architectural Site Planning and Architectural Shape. Courtyard Type, Colony Type, and Singleness Type represent Site Planning. Indicative Modification, Metaphor Modification, Compromise Modification are used for Architectural Shape. Styles of North Korean Contemporary Architecture are quite limited, even though it can be classified in many various ways. The major reasons for this are the chief governor's personal opinion on architecture, subordination of architecture into politics, and inflexibility of communist society.
