Abstract This paper deals with the effect of the wall's aspect ratio to the effective flange width of the T- shaped wall. In this study, the non-linear FEM analysis has been conducted in a parametric way, by varying heigth of the wall, length of the web wall, thickness of the flange wall and aspect ratio of the T-shaped wall. The results of the analysis clearly indicates that the most influential variable on the effective width excluding the thickness of the flange wall is the wall's aspect ratio and the current existing formulae to compute the effective width of the flange wall based on a particular variable are not effective in computing the effective width of T-wall from the viewpoint that these do not consider the wall's aspect ratio changes. Based on the results of FEM analyses, the method to compute the effective width of the flange wall is suggested, and the validity of the proposed method is confirmed.
