Abstract |
The purpose of this experimental study is to evaluate the structural performance of RCS structure. Six specimens were manufactured in 2/3 scale.??The standard type specimen uses transverse tie bars in the joint for the joint confinement and the shear resistance. The specimens in LCC series were designed with cover plates on the joint instead of transverse reinforcements of LCS specimen. Experimental variables of LCC series are the joint details of an artificial hole in steel web, low strength of concrete, cover plates not welded together, beam failure type instead of the joint. Overall response of all the specimens is satisfactory in terms of stiffness retention capacity, joint shear resistance although they were designed to fail in the joint. The cover plates are found to confine the joint effectively providing high capability of joint shear resistance. The hole in steel web panel did not reduce the joint shear strength. However, full confining effect cannot be expected if cover plates are not welded together. In addition, the predictions by ASCE guidelines showed that the joint strength might be estimated conservatively. |
