Abstract Finite element formulations for geometrical nonlinear analysis of pretensioned membrane structures with a Triangular Constants Strain element are presented. The total lagrangian formulation (T.L.F.) is introduced in the nonlinear incremental iterative procedure. Based on these theoretical formulations, a FE nonlinear analysis program is developed. In order to show the validity of the presented formulation and program, initial shape finding analysis and stress-deformation analysis for membrane structures are carried out. The results are in good agreement with the results available in the existing literature.
